About BuildCalc
Democratizing civil engineering precision and construction cost transparency for homeowners, builders, civil engineers, and architects across India.
Who We Are
BuildCalc is an independent digital construction estimation and quantity surveying platform founded in 2024. Residential construction in India has historically been fraught with budget ambiguity, unpredictable contractor markups, hidden material shrinkage, and fragmented regional land revenue units.
We created BuildCalc to bridge this information gap. By translating complex civil engineering principles, Indian Standard (IS) codes, and Central Public Works Department (CPWD) rate analysis into intuitive, instant calculators, we empower property owners and professionals alike to estimate material volumes, structural steel requirements, brickwork quantities, and realistic budgets with complete confidence.
How BuildCalc Aligns with BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) Codes
To ensure reliable, professional-grade estimations, BuildCalc’s calculators implement the mathematical equations, nominal batching ratios, standard material densities, and volume conversion factors prescribed in official Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) civil engineering codes and CPWD (Central Public Works Department) specifications:
IS 456:2000Plain and Reinforced Concrete — Code of Practice
Clause 9 & Table 9Implemented in our Cement & Concrete Calculator:
- Nominal Volumetric Mixes: Accurately computes cement, sand, and coarse aggregate proportions for M10 (1:3:6), M15 (1:2:4), M20 (1:1.5:3), and M25 (1:1:2) grades.
- Dry Volume Shrinkage Multiplier (1.54x): When water is added to dry cement, sand, and aggregate, the total volume contracts as fine particles settle into interstitial voids. In accordance with standard CPWD/IS practice, our algorithm multiplies the required wet RCC volume by 1.54 (a 54% dry volume increase).
- Standard Cement Bag Density: Uses the standard unit weight of 1 cement bag = 50 kg (1,440 kg/m³ density, equaling 1.226 cu.ft or 0.0347 m³).
IS 2212:1991 & IS 1077Code of Practice for Brickwork & Common Burnt Clay Bricks
Masonry PracticeImplemented in our Brick & Masonry Calculator:
- Standard Modular Dimensions: Models modular brick dimensions of 190 mm × 90 mm × 90 mm without mortar, expanding to nominal dimensions of 200 mm × 100 mm × 100 mm (500 bricks/m³) with standard 10 mm mortar joints.
- Traditional Regional Bricks: Accommodates traditional non-modular brick dimensions (225 mm × 112.5 mm × 75 mm or 9" × 4.5" × 3").
- Mortar Dry Factor (1.33x): Applies a 33% dry expansion factor to mortar volume for 1:4 (4.5" partition walls) and 1:6 (9" load-bearing walls) mix designs.
IS 1786:2008High Strength Deformed Steel Bars and Wires for Concrete Reinforcement
Fe 500D / Fe 550DImplemented in our Steel Rebar Weight Calculator:
- Theoretical Unit Mass Formula: Based on the standard density of rolled steel (7,850 kg/m³), computes unit weight using the universal civil formula Weight (kg/m) = D² / 162.2 (where D is the nominal bar diameter in millimeters).
- Standard Commercial Rods: Formulated for standard 12-meter commercial rebar lengths across 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 16mm, 20mm, 25mm, and 32mm diameters.
IS 1200 (Part 3) & NBC 2016Measurement of Building Works & National Building Code
Plinth & SetbacksImplemented in our Plinth Area & Built-Up Calculator:
- Opening Deductions: Follows IS 1200 Part 3 rules for deducting doors, windows, and lintel beams to determine exact net masonry volume.
- Setback & Coverage Ratios: Follows NBC 2016 guidelines for mandatory front, rear, and side setback margins to calculate maximum permissible ground coverage.
*Disclaimer: BuildCalc is an independent engineering software platform. While our calculation engines faithfully execute the formulas and volumetric factors codified in these BIS standards, BuildCalc is not an official certifying body of the Bureau of Indian Standards.
Market Rate Research & Verification Protocol
Material prices and labor wages fluctuate based on regional supply chains, fuel costs, seasonal monsoon cycles, and local mining regulations. To maintain high accuracy, our research team executes a continuous quarterly benchmarking workflow:
Direct tracking of wholesale cement, TMT steel, M-sand, aggregate, and red clay/fly ash brick distributors across Tier-1, Tier-2, and Tier-3 cities.
Monitoring daily wage rates for master masons (Raj Mistry), bar-benders, shuttering carpenters, plumbers, and unskilled helpers.
Benchmarking baseline figures against official State PWD and CPWD Delhi Schedule of Rates (DSR) documents.

Editorial Independence & Transparency
Zero Contractor Bias: BuildCalc operates strictly as an independent engineering resource. We do not sell construction materials, nor do we take referral commissions from contractors to steer estimates in their favor.
Always Free to Use: All calculations, guides, and rate tables on BuildCalc are freely accessible without paywalls, subscriptions, or gated registration requirements.
Community-Driven Verification: We actively welcome feedback, rate adjustments, and localized land unit clarifications from practicing site engineers, architects, and quantity surveyors across India.
