How to Use This Formula

The Bricks Calculator helps you estimate the raw materials required for constructing a brick wall based on its dimensions and the size of the bricks used.

  1. Enter your wall dimensions (Length, Height, and Thickness).
  2. Specify the dimensions of a single brick (standard is usually 9"x4.5"x3").
  3. The calculator will determine the total volume, account for mortar joints, and provide the exact count of bricks and mortar required.

Brick & Mortar Estimation

Planning a masonry wall? Our brick calculator helps you determine the exact number of bricks and the volume of mortar (cement and sand) required for your construction project. By factoring in wall dimensions and standard brick sizes, you can avoid material wastage and budget overruns.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bricks do I need for a wall and how is it calculated?

To calculate required bricks, divide the net masonry wall volume by the volume of a single brick including a 10 mm mortar joint. For a standard 9-inch thick wall in India, you need approximately 10 to 11 modular bricks per square foot (or 500 bricks per cubic meter). For a 4.5-inch partition wall, you need 5 to 5.5 bricks per square foot.

What is the standard size of a modular brick with and without mortar?

In India, the standard modular brick size without mortar is 190 mm × 90 mm × 90 mm (approx 7.5" × 3.5" × 3.5"). With a standard 10 mm mortar joint, the nominal brick dimensions are 200 mm × 100 mm × 100 mm (approx 9" × 4.5" × 3"). Traditional red clay bricks usually measure 9" × 4.25" × 2.75".

How much cement and sand mortar is required for brick masonry?

For standard 9-inch brickwork, a 1:6 mortar mix ratio (1 part cement : 6 parts sand) is used, requiring approx 1.25 bags of cement and 7.5 cu.ft of sand per 100 sq ft of wall. For 4.5-inch partition walls, a richer 1:4 mix ratio is recommended for structural stability.

Does this brick calculator account for wastage and openings?

Yes, the calculator automatically includes an industry-standard 5% wastage allowance for brick cutting, transit handling, and breakage. Always deduct the area of doors and windows from gross wall dimensions for net brickwork.
